Did You Know?

Girls' confidence drops by up to 30% between the ages of 8 and 14, with lasting effects on self-esteem, leadership potential, and academic engagement. By beginning in 8th grade—just before the critical transition to high school—J.O.Y. meets girls at a pivotal moment, helping them envision their power and possibility from the very start.

OUR MISSION

The Jewels of Youth (J.O.Y.) DC Foundation is a community- and school-based leadership and empowerment program for girls in the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area. Beginning after 8th grade and continuing through high school graduation and up to age 20. The JOY DC Foundation provides a developmentally responsive curriculum that builds confidence, nurtures leadership, and strengthens identity. Through hands-on learning experiences—including workshops, field trips, community service, peer support groups, educational advocacy, and professional development—participants grow into self-assured, purpose-driven young leaders prepared to thrive in all spaces they occupy. Our participants are known as “Gems,” like gemstones—formed under pressure and refined by time—they reflect brilliance, resilience, and inner strength. J.O.Y. affirms each Gem’s unique value while fostering a strong sense of self, purpose, and power.

OUR VISION

The Jewels of Youth (J.O.Y.) DC Foundation envisions a world where every girl—especially Black girls and those from underrepresented communities, feels seen, heard, and empowered to lead. We strive to create safe, culturally affirming spaces where young women are equipped with the confidence, skills, and community support they need to boldly shape their futures and transform the world around them.
